1. PREAMBLE
The Bengal Institute of Oriental Studies (BIOS) is a non-profit educational and research institution dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and dissemination of Oriental Studies, Indian Knowledge Systems, Sanskrit Learning, Yoga, Kriya Yoga, Philosophy, Spiritual Sciences, Astrology, Cultural Heritage, and allied disciplines.
These Rules and Regulations govern the admission, academic administration, conduct, examinations, certification, and general discipline of all students enrolled in the Institute.
Admission to any programme of the Institute shall constitute acceptance of these Rules and Regulations by the student.
2. SPECIAL PROVISIONS
The Governing Body of the Bengal Institute of Oriental Studies reserves the right, by a duly adopted resolution, to relax, modify, suspend, or amend any provision relating to:
– Admission requirements
– Eligibility criteria
– Fee structure
– Payment schedule
– Scholarships and concessions
– Course curriculum
– Academic calendar
– Examination system
– Evaluation methods
– Certification, Diploma or Degree requirements
– Convocation procedures
– Any other academic or administrative matter
Such decisions shall be final and binding.
3. ADMISSION POLICY
The Institute ordinarily conducts Academic Sessions commencing in:
– January
– April
– July
– October
Additional or Special Sessions may be introduced whenever considered necessary.
Applicants seeking admission shall:
– Complete the prescribed Online or Offline Application Form.
– Submit all required supporting documents.
– Produce valid proof of identity.
– Fulfil the eligibility requirements.
– Pay the prescribed Admission Fee, Registration Fee, Session Fee, Tuition Fee and other applicable charges.
Submission of an application does not automatically guarantee admission.
The Institute reserves the absolute right to accept, reject, cancel or defer any application without assigning any reason.
4. ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility criteria shall vary according to the nature of the programme.
The Institute may require:
– Educational Qualifications
– Previous Academic Records
– Interviews
– Written Tests
– Practical Assessment
– Experience Certificates
– Recommendation Letters
– Spiritual Qualifications (where applicable)
5. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
International applicants are welcome.
They may be required to submit:
– Passport
– Visa (where applicable)
– National Identity Proof
– English Proficiency (where required)
– Educational Equivalency Documents
The Institute may conduct classes online for overseas students.
6. MODE OF STUDY
The Institute may offer:
– Regular Classroom Programmes
– Weekend Programmes
– Distance Education
– Online Learning
– Hybrid Learning
– Workshops
– Seminars
– Retreats
– Research Programmes
The mode of delivery may be changed whenever necessary.
7. COURSE MATERIALS
Students shall receive learning materials in printed and/or digital format.
Materials may be supplied through:
– Printed Books
– PDF Notes
– E-books
– Learning Management System (LMS)
– Email
– Institute Portal
Certain reference books may require separate purchase.
8. ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to maintain regular attendance.
The Institute may prescribe minimum attendance requirements before allowing students to appear in examinations.
Attendance may also be considered while awarding distinctions, scholarships and special recognitions.
9. EXAMINATIONS
Evaluation may include:
– Written Examination
– Oral Examination (Viva Voce)
– Practical Examination
– Assignments
– Projects
– Research Papers
– Presentations
– Online Assessment
– Continuous Internal Assessment
The Institute reserves the right to revise the examination pattern whenever necessary.
The decision of the Examination Board shall be final.
10. RESULTS AND CERTIFICATION
Successful students shall receive:
– Mark Sheet
– Certificate
– Diploma
– Degree
– Transcript
– Merit Certificate
– Special Award
Duplicate certificates may be issued subject to applicable rules and fees.
11. DISTANCE & ONLINE EDUCATION
Students enrolled under Distance or Online Learning shall enjoy academic facilities similar to regular students wherever applicable.
Communication may be made through:
– Email
– Video Conferencing
– Learning Portal
– Telephone
– Postal Services
Online students shall comply with all academic requirements prescribed by the Institute.
12. PAYMENT OF FEES
Fees shall be paid within the prescribed schedule.
Accepted modes of payment include:
– Cash
– Bank Transfer
– NEFT
– RTGS
– IMPS
– UPI
– Debit/Credit Card
– Online Payment Gateway
– Demand Draft (where accepted)
Delayed payments may attract late fees.
Failure to pay fees for more than three consecutive months may result in suspension or cancellation of enrolment.
Re-admission shall be entirely at the discretion of the Governing Body.
13. SCHOLARSHIPS & FEE CONCESSIONS
The Institute may grant:
– Merit Scholarships
– Need-based Financial Assistance
– Early Payment Discounts
– Alumni Benefits
– Special Concessions
The Governing Body shall determine such concessions from time to time.
14. REFUND POLICY
Admission and Registration Fees are ordinarily non-refundable.
Refunds of Tuition Fees, if any, shall be governed by the Institute’s Refund Policy prevailing at the relevant time.
15. STUDENT DISCIPLINE
Every student shall:
– Maintain discipline.
– Respect teachers and staff.
– Respect fellow students.
– Protect Institute property.
– Maintain academic honesty.
– Observe ethical conduct.
– Preserve the dignity of the Institute.
16. PROHIBITED CONDUCT
The following shall constitute misconduct:
– Ragging
– Harassment
– Violence
– Threatening behaviour
– Discrimination
– Academic dishonesty
– Plagiarism
– Cheating
– Forgery
– Misuse of Institute property
– Cyber misconduct
– Defamation
– Disruption of classes
Such acts may result in warning, suspension, cancellation of admission, expulsion or legal action.
17. ANTI-RAGGING POLICY
The Institute maintains a Zero Tolerance Policy against ragging.
Any student found involved in ragging shall be liable for immediate disciplinary and legal action.
18. ANTI-HARASSMENT POLICY
The Institute is committed to providing a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment.
Any form of harassment, discrimination or abuse shall invite disciplinary action.
19. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Students shall submit only their own original work.
The use of plagiarism, contract writing, impersonation, falsification of records or any dishonest academic practice is strictly prohibited.
20. USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
Students may use Artificial Intelligence tools only where permitted by the course instructor.
AI-generated work must be properly acknowledged whenever required.
21. PRIVACY & DATA PROTECTION
The Institute shall maintain the confidentiality of student records in accordance with applicable laws.
Student information may be used only for legitimate academic and administrative purposes.
22. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Copyright in Institute publications, course materials, lectures, recordings and digital resources shall remain vested in the Institute unless otherwise specified.
Students shall not reproduce or distribute such materials without written permission.
23. AMENDMENTS
The Governing Body may amend these Rules and Regulations whenever necessary.
All amendments shall become effective from the date notified by the Institute.
24. JURISDICTION
Any dispute arising from admission, examinations, certification or any other matter relating to the Institute shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the competent courts at Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
25. DECLARATION
Every applicant, by submitting the Admission Form, declares that:
– the information furnished is true and correct;
– all supporting documents are genuine;
– the applicant agrees to abide by all Rules and Regulations of the Bengal Institute of Oriental Studies;
– violation of these Rules may result in disciplinary action, including cancellation of admission.
